It does seem as though these border stories are excessively violent and too often American-centric. I think it's time to hear more about the "other side" and the toll this violence (and trafficking, drug issues, etc.) has taken on Mexican society, not just as a whole but the price paid by individuals who only wish to live their lives in peace. I"m not sure how well those stories would be received by those Americans who view Mexicans as "the other" (a violent, lustful, vengeful other at that) but those would be the very people who could benefit from hearing those stories.

Totally agree. Unfortunately the news media often covers things from a narrow perspective that seems to justify the use of violence. Then Hollywood produces these narratives because violence is 'exciting' and profitable. Maybe it's up to us to keep learning so we can understand what's really going on.

I agree. I also think that those of us who want to keep learning and understanding should share (or try to, at least) our discoveries with others, including those who may be somewhat resistant. Maybe using stories as a means of sharing could be a way of breaking down those self-imposed mental restrictions in our audience.
